One of the last pages of the city’s history is connected with the post-war period. Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt met the decision to move the borders.
Breslau was renamed to Wroclaw and the Germans had to leave the city. The Polish people from different parts of the country came to the west to start their new life. Not everyone who came to Wroclaw after the World War II, did so voluntarily. Many of them were forced to leave the eastern part of the country, which was under the Soviet authorities after the war.
The end of the war was at the same time the beginning of the communist period in Polish history. This was a period of propaganda, central administration, planned economy and reconstruction, but also a time of hope for a better future and a struggle for freedom in Poland.
During this walk, you will learn how the city has freed itself from ruins and turned into one of the fastest developing cities in Poland, with an unemployment rate of less than 3%.
Find out more about everyday life in a communist country and about the paradox of the central planned economy, where plans indeed were good, but implementation was not necessarily successful.
Moreover get to know how the students fought with laughter against the Communists. Thanks to these stories, you shall discover how the citizens created a brand new identity that is nowadays visible in the streets.
