In 1917 a Jewish tombstone from the year 1203 was found in the Cathedral in Wroclaw. Ever since, it is the oldest evidence of the Jewish presence in the city and in Poland generally.
During this tour you discover the places where the Jewish community lived. We will find out why the Jewish community had to leave the city in the late Middle Ages and how they came back to the city in the 17th century.
We visit the former Jewish Quarter, where the first rabbinical seminar in the world was opened and where the community of The White Stork Synagogue still takes care of the Jewish heritage. In addition, you will learn more about tolerance and cooperation in the Four Denomination District, which is the contemporary name of the former Jewish District.
After a walk in the city center, we go by tram to the Old Jewish Cemetery, where we track the history of the Jewish community in its Golden Age in Breslau. Twelve thousand tombstones, various architectural styles, as well as numerous climbing plants, which cover the Matzevahs create an enchanting atmosphere.
The following personalities were buried there: Ferdinand Lassalle (founder of the first workers’ party in Germany), the parents of Fritz Haber (Nobel Prize laureate), Auguste Stein (mother of Edith Stein, patron saint of Europe), the Schottländer family (the richest family in the city).
This tour is a journey through centuries, during which you get to know the history of the Jewish community in the city (more than 800 years old!) and find out how the community was searching for its identity.
